One of the most talked about and anticipated films in the DC franchise is the Suicide Squad film set to release next year. It’s the first time we will be seeing iconic characters, such as Harley Quinn brought to the big screen. Something many fans have been waiting for. But with the recent cast photos and costume design releases, everyone is growing increasingly more and more wary of what the hell DC is thinking. Everyone was incredibly underwhelmed with the first release of the cast photo. It looked like a bad, cheesy, gang movie gone wrong. All the way from Harley’s blue and red tipped hair to Deadshot’s wannabe Deathstroke get up. Not to mention that for some reason, Katana, a known heroine, is featured in the photo. For anyone who knows comics or has watched Arrow, the Suicide Squad is a group of “reformed” villains working under Amanda Waller. It’s a little strange to have someone who is always a hero lumped in with this group.
Then, for the 75th anniversary of The Joker’s creation, we got a photo released of Jared Leto’s Joker. The only thing that can be said about it is that it looks like the Joker went juggalo and became a huge Insane Clown Posse fan. The internet dubbed this image as the “jokalo.” It’s terrible; all the way from grills on the teeth (killing the iconic white toothy smile) to tattoos that look like some fan of the Joker would get but not the Joker himself. After the negative backlash, the writers and directors said that it was not the final design. Claiming that it was simply something to put out for the anniversary, nothing more and nothing less.
And yet, there are now set photos of Jared Leto’s Joker with Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn) and the design looks just as bad, if not worse. The tattoos are really there and the suit they chose to go with continues the terrible juggalo look. Nothing about this look is working and this movie continues to wash my hopes down the drain. I was, initially, excited for this film and the cast seemed very strong. But now, like every other DC film, they just keep crushing my expectations. Let’s face it, Marvel is running the movie world for now. We can only hope that DC gets their shit together and soon.
